Michigan woman gets three years for embezzlement

A former employee of a dentist's office in Midland, Michigan, has been sentenced to three years in prison for her involvement in an embezzlement scheme. An accounts payable audit revealed that she stole nearly $1 million from the business.

According to MLive, Stephanie Cieslinski pleaded guilty in August to one charge of embezzlement of more than $100,000 and was recently sentenced at a hearing. She has also been ordered to pay back $750,000 in restitution to her former employer, Dr. Michael Smith. Stephanie's husband, Kenneth Cieslinski, has also been charged with two counts of embezzlement for his involvement in the illegal activity. He faces up to 10 years in prison and is currently awaiting sentencing, the news source reported.

In a separate article, MLive stated that Mrs. Cieslinski embezzled the nearly $1 million from Dr. Smith's office by writing fraudulent checks and then having her husband deposit them into a bank account in his name. Before his arrest, Mr. Cieslinski served as a corrections officer at the Bay County Jail in Bay City, Michigan, for more than 20 years. Mrs. Cielinski had been employed by the dentist's office for more than 10 years, according to the source.
